The Director of Corporate Giving and Sponsorship is a key leader within the External Affairs Division and is responsible for managing the corporate fundraising team to secure financial support for all campaign priorities as well as the annual operating support needed to support the museum’s budget. The Director also retains his or her own fundraising portfolio and is expected to achieve her/his own fundraising goal.

The External Affairs team is charged with raising the funds for our current campaign: Limitless. This $380 million goal is based on extensive research and a belief that our diverse donor base is ready and willing to make transformational commitments to MSI.

The corporate team is expected to raise significant funding within this campaign. The annual unrestricted portion equals approximately $2.5 million and the restricted portion will range from $70 - $100 million over the course of the campaign, which will likely extend over 4-5 years.

Responsibilities and Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Senior member of the External Affairs team; works with the Vice President on overall division strategies, as well as specific fundraising strategies and plans.
  • Manage the major gift effort to maximize donor relationships and their financial commitment to the Museum. 
  • Manage a portfolio of major gift donors and prospects.
  • Participate in the fundraising around the Columbian Ball, the Museum’s largest fundraising event which is held in the Fall each year. The Columbian Ball is managed directly by the Director, External Affairs whose focus is the individual donor. The Corporate team, however, is essential for the Ball’s success and the Director and the corporate team must be a strong support to the effort.
  • Responsible for managing the growth of the corporate membership program in terms of acquisition of new donors, the renewal and upgrade of current donors into major gift prospects and supervising the activity of the Corporate Giving staff.
  • With the Vice President, responsible for the strategic direction of the Sponsorship program.
  • Prepare fundraising and expense budget projections. 
  • Manage a staff of 5 including Corporate Membership, Sponsorship and Major Giving Officers  
  • Participate in select Advisory committees including the President’s Council, Black Creativity, Campaign committees and others as determined.  
  • Part of the Museum’s Management Team.

Qualifications:

  • Management-level experience and with demonstrable skills in working with major donors, goal setting and assessment.  Exceptional “people skills” including an ability to communicate in a dynamic, engaging way is required.
  • Experience working with CEOs, board members, and staff to set development goals; creating participation and follow through on contacts and activities is key. 
  • Experience in seeking out new prospect and donor relationships, directing the cultivation and stewardship process, and successfully closing gifts when appropriate. 
  • Personal experience creating and implementing successful gift strategies and tactics
  • High integrity team player; results-driven and flexible. 
  • Extreme focus and self-confidence with a

  • Personable, poised, supportive and diplomatic
  • Demonstrated ability of building strong and sustaining corporate giving programs
  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of seven years leadership experience.
